Target Advertisement: Useful or Intrusive?

ESL news-based lesson plan

Lesson Overview

In this ESL lesson on Advertising and Marketing, students will learn about Ad targeting and how it works.  Targeted advertising relies on data collected from users’ web activities, giving certain users the impression that the ads are intrusive and ” always following them around”. ESL learners will also get the opportunity to speak about the privacy concerns that are typically related to targeted advertisements while at the same time learning relevant vocabulary and language structures.  The ESL lesson is based on the video How Ads Follow You around the Internet

It focuses on practising key listening, speaking, collaboration and critical thinking skills.  If used as a flipped ESL lesson, you will need at least 90 minutes to complete this lesson. However, lessons can run up to 3 hours ( consider two  90-minute lessons or for university teachers to adjust as needed).

While targeting intermediate and upper-intermediate language learners of English, it is highly adaptable as it has been purposely designed to facilitate mixed-level classes. This includes targeting professionals in a tertiary institution such as a university or within a professional environment.
