Business English: Investing in Bonds

ESL video-based lesson plan

Lesson Overview

In this ESL lesson on Finance and Investment, students will learn about bonds as an investment option. Bonds are financial assets in the form of loans, or IOUs, that indicate debt owed to an investor by the government or a firm. A corporation that issues bonds borrows money from investors in return for pledging to pay them interest on their money at a future date. Students will debate why someone wishes to invest in bonds. The lesson is rich in finance and investment language structure.

It focuses on practising key listening, speaking, collaboration and critical thinking skills.  If used as a flipped ESL lesson, you will need at least 90 minutes to complete this lesson. However, lessons can run up to 3 hours ( consider two  90-minute lessons or for university teachers to adjust as needed).

While targeting intermediate and upper-intermediate language learners of English, it is highly adaptable as it has been purposely designed to facilitate mixed-level classes. This includes targeting professionals in a tertiary institution such as a university or within a professional environment.
