Lesson Overview
This ESL lesson plan, designed for intermediate to upper-intermediate (CEFR B2) learners, introduces students to the Technology theme by exploring the issue of endangered elements in the periodic table. Through this lesson, students will learn about essential elements used in devices like smartphones and computers, discuss why these elements are at risk, and examine the impact of potential shortages on technology and the environment.
This lesson builds skills in reading comprehension, vocabulary, speaking, and critical thinking, with a focus on using precise language in academic writing. Students will practice using specific scientific terms to explain ideas clearly, a key skill for academic and professional communication in fields like science and technology.
Activities include engaging discussions, vocabulary exercises, and reading tasks based on an article adapted from The Conversation. Students will also work together to create a digital recycling poster, research an element, design a recycling awareness slogan, and present their findings to the class, helping them develop teamwork and presentation skills.
This 90-minute lesson can be expanded to two 90-minute sessions (three hours in total) for university or workplace settings. The flexible format makes it suitable for students interested in science, technology, and environmental studies and those studying English for Academic or Specific Purposes (EAP/ESP).
