What are mini nuclear reactors?

ESL news-based lesson plan

Lesson Overview

In this lesson on English for the Energy industry, ESL students will learn about  Small, modular nuclear reactors, a proposed alternative to big nuclear power plants. Small, modular nuclear reactors are expected to play a key part in the energy transition as countries try to move away from fossil fuels towards more sustainable and cleaner sources of energy. Students will learn vocabulary and language structure to speak about the energy sector while looking at the challenges associated with smaller nuclear power plants.

It focuses on practising key listening, speaking, collaboration and critical thinking skills.  If used as a flipped ESL lesson, you will need at least 90 minutes to complete this lesson. However, lessons can run up to 3 hours ( consider two  90-minute lessons or for university teachers to adjust as needed).

While targeting intermediate and upper-intermediate language learners of English, it is highly adaptable as it has been purposely designed to facilitate mixed-level classes. This includes targeting professionals in a tertiary institution such as a university or within a professional environment.
