What is a smart grid?

ESL news-video lesson plan

Lesson Overview

This lesson is related to the topic of electricity and energy. It will help students understand the infrastructure within the energy sector. Utilities companies currently use grids to carry electricity to their customers’ homes and businesses, however, the system is not very efficient. However, investments in smart meters and grid upgrades could assist utility companies and consumers in understanding and reducing their energy use. Students study various terminologies and linguistic structures related to energy in order to discuss the topic surrounding smart grids.

It focuses on practising key listening, speaking, collaboration and critical thinking skills.  If used as a flipped ESL lesson, you will need at least 90 minutes to complete this lesson. However, lessons can run up to 3 hours ( consider two  90-minute lessons or for university teachers to adjust as needed).

While targeting intermediate and upper-intermediate language learners of English, it is highly adaptable as it has been purposely designed to facilitate mixed-level classes. This includes targeting professionals in a tertiary institution such as a university or within a professional environment.
